When I've been writing about Diplomacy in the past, I've struggled to come up with a catch-all phrase to encompass all types of Diplomacy competitions. I've thought about using 'competitive' Diplomacy but, surely, any game of Diplomacy should be competitive? I've used 'professional' Diplomacy, but it's a rare thing indeed for anyone to be paid to play Dip! So neither of these terms work.
And then I came up with 'Arena Diplomacy' - Diplomacy games that are part of a tournament, a league or something similar. In other words, something more competitive than a one-off game, or more official than an on-going series of scored games.
This site, ARENA DIPLOMACY, was set up to host tournaments and leagues that I have a part in organising, and that are open to anyone who wants to play in them. I also run arena events on some sites - OK, mainly Playdiplomacy - that are not necessarily open to anyone but aimed at members of that site. I'll still advertise them here (probably) but they won't be officially part of the ARENA DIPLOMACY project.
Each arena event will have its own category on the site, except those linked to the ONLINE DIPLOMACY LEAGUES project. Currently, I am working on two events... or four, depending on how you count them.
One is the WORLD CUP DIPLOMACY event. This is based on similar events from within the Hobby in the past. It's a team event - will you represent your own country or region? Take a look.
The other is the ONLINE DIPLOMACY LEAGUES project, which encompasses three events: the ONLINE PRESS LEAGUE, the ONLINE GUNBOAT LEAGUE and the ONLINE SPEEDBOAT LEAGUE. If you're interested, look here.
There are two other events that I'm looking at: the PBEM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, specifically for the play-by-email fraternity, and the ONLINE DIPLOMACY CHAMPIONSHIP. The latter is a pre-established event, and I was involved in setting up the 2022 ODC on Playdip (before the first stroke finished that involvement). I'm currently investigating the next ODC and how it should be organised.
Currently, as I'm writing this post, you won't be able to see info about the PBEM WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP or the ODC because those categories are hidden. Once I'm further along, information will be out there.
So that's 'Arena' Diplomacy and ARENA DIPLOMACY explained. Jump in. Bring your friends. Diplomacy doesn't really end friendships, you know.
